I remember reading about Rookie in The Hairpin and, even though I was 21 in 2011, I read Rookie for years. That shit was life changing and life affirming and fun and light and weighty all at once. I’m so happy you’re here now, welcome Tavi!
The fans were pissed because it was literally just a marketing move to expand the fan base of one of the last remaining legacy industry mules with any name recognition... in combination with reigning in the pre-90s aggro culture that wasn't controlled from the outset like the unit-shifting "aggression" of 90s bands ("having no prior knowledge of the band I was totally invested".. yes, that's the point).
All on top of the fact that therapy is mostly a scam, as demonstrated by that sign: it actually means nothing at all — it's just an empty platitude. Without having seen it, I can only assume by "zone" he's actually talking about the concept of "flow state" — which can be "achieved" through the combination of an internal locus of control and a thorough knowledge of your tools to move toward an unknown.
Their back catalog is evidence they've achieved this state before... the problem they had in the 2000s is one almost all musicians go through: you hit a wall because there are no more "unknowns", and regardless of how easily you can slip into a "flow state", you're stuck on repeat... and you know it, and that knowledge starts to impact everything else in the process.
If you haven't noticed, their output didn't actually improve after all that therapy... in fact, some of their worst albums are what followed. It seems all they achieved was being content with being on repeat... for the sake of all the people whose paychecks depend on them going through the motions. That's why people were mad — they should have just quit, but chose to be milked by the industry.
yes!!! can’t tell you how much I used to pour over your blog. I always used to love your posts which collected film screen caps, runway shots, random internet ephemera etc.
Some Kind of Monster is an all-time classic! My friend tour-manages bands and constantly quotes it. Intra-group power dynamics brilliantly revealed. Aerosmith's Making of Pump is another glimpse at how hard it is to combine rock n roll with sobriety.
Welcome, love the title...
Welcome Tavi! I just started mine and love your rules! Let's have fun! 🤍
Welcome Tavi!!!
